The Wild Pear Tree

WHAT A FATHER KEEPS HIDDEN IS REVEALED IN THE SON.

After graduating from college, Sinan Karasu (Dogu Demirkol) returns to the village where he grew up only to realize that nothing has changed when it comes to his father (Murat Cemcir) and his gambling debts. More than three hours is a lot of time to spend with a young man who’s trying to accomplish something of his life but seems destined to go nowhere, like his dad. The film manages to say something worthwhile here and there about life in working-class Turkey (including religion and rampant anti-intellectualism), but often seems as stuck as its protagonist.
