Sometime in the future, passengers are boarding a spacecraft that will take them from an ailing Earth to Mars, but Aniara subsequently faces a tremendous challenge… Swedish science fiction may not be a familiar thing to most audiences, but this one offers an interesting dystopian view of what we might face if we don’t get global warming under control. The filmmakers’ feature debut was inspired by the Nobel Prize-winning author Harry Martinson’s epic poem; its themes are well represented throughout the film. Uneven, but ultimately a haunting experience.
