Summer of 84

Oregon, summer 1984; 15-year-old Davey (Graham Verchere) becomes convinced that his cop neighbor (Rich Sommer) is a serial killer. No effort has been spared to recreate the look and feel of American 1980s suburbia, complete with an appropriate electronic score. Stranger Things comes to mind, with its portrait of young teenage boys facing a dark threat. A lot of charm here, and Verchere is one reason, but the story is awfully familiar, a bit too slow and leads exactly where you think… apart perhaps from an unexpectedly open ending.

2018-Canada. 105 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by François Simard, Anouk Whissell, Yoann-Karl Whissell. Music: Le Matos. Cast: Graham Verchere (Davey Armstrong), Judah Lewis (Tommy ”Eats” Eaton), Caleb Emery (Dale ”Woody” Woodworth), Cory Gruter-Andrew, Rich Sommer, Tiera Skovbye.
