PRAY FOR FORGIVENESS.
In 1952, a nun hangs herself in a Romanian monastery; the Vatican sends their best investigator (Demián Bichir) together with a young novitiate (Taissa Farmiga) to look into what’s going on there. A spin-off to The Conjuring 2 (2016) where a horrifying ghostly supporting character gets her own story. Much like Annabelle (2014), this one finds it hard to stand on its own legs. The leads are not engaging enough, and it’s possible that the thrills would be more fun to experience in an actual theme-park haunted house, because that’s the effect the filmmakers seem to be going for.
2018-U.S. 96 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Corin Hardy. Cast: Demián Bichir (Father Burke), Taissa Farmiga (Sister Irene), Jonas Bloquet (Maurice ”Frenchie” Theriault), Bonnie Aarons, Charlotte Hope, Ingrid Bisu.
Trivia: Co-produced by James Wan.
