Sharp Objects

WELCOME HOME.

After the disappearance of two girls in her Missouri hometown, alcoholic reporter Camille Preaker (Amy Adams) reluctantly goes back home, but her overbearing mother (Patricia Clarkson) is not happy to see her… The director of Big Little Lies (2017) made another talked-about limited-series event for HBO that featured interesting female characters and a juicy murder mystery. A great story about mental illness, small-town grievances and battling past and present demons, but its effect is greatly diminished by excess; it would have been more exciting as a movie or a regular three-episode miniseries. Adams and Clarkson are standouts in the cast.

2018-U.S. Made for TV. 405 min. Color. Created by Marti Noxon. Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée. Novel: Gillian Flynn. Cast: Amy Adams (Camille Preaker), Patricia Clarkson (Adora Crellin), Chris Messina (Richard Willis), Eliza Scanlen, Matt Craven, Henry Czerny… Elizabeth Perkins.

Trivia: Originally shown in eight episodes. Co-executive produced by Adams and Vallée.

Golden Globe: Best Supporting Actress (Clarkson).
