RBG

HERO. ICON. DISSENTER.

A very likable and substantive documentary about Ruth Bader Ginsburg, justice on the Supreme Court since 1993, who has increasingly become the target of right-wingers. Even if she’s in her 80s, we learn that she’s in excellent health, as diligent as ever, even having a little fun with her status as a feminist icon. The film gets close to this famously earnest woman, her family and friends, even painting a lovely portrait of her long marriage. Several court cases illustrate her rise as a phenomenon in law and what role she has played in the advancement of women’s rights in America. Political heavyweights like Senator Orrin Hatch and former President Bill Clinton add their insights, but the quietly charismatic Ginsburg herself dominates every scene she’s in.

2018-U.S. 98 min. Color-B/W. Produced and directed by Julie Cohen, Betsy West. Song: ”I’ll Fight” (Diane Warren).

Trivia: One of Ginsburg’s most important cases was dramatized in On the Basis of Sex (2018).

Last word: “It was certainly important to us that we reflected her persona as the ‘Notorious RBG’ and also that we got access to filming her in the gym. Her work out regiment is part of the legend. She had talked about it and other people had reported on it but we hadn’t actually seen it. So for a while, we were thinking, ‘Well, gee, is this true? Does this 84-year-old woman really do push-ups and planks?’ When we were able to get in there and show that she actually does that, we knew that the footage had to be close to the top of the film. It does inform the spirit of the picture.” (West, RogerEbert.com)
