Godless

WELCOME TO NO MAN’S LAND.

The outlaw Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell) is on the run from his boss and adoptive father (Jeff Daniels), arriving in a small town where almost every man was killed in a huge mining accident… Much of what Scott Frank has written before (including the same year’s Logan) echoes Western symbolism, so this excellent miniseries of his comes as no great surprise. In many ways it is a classic story about a ruthless but complex villain (played with gusto by Daniels), a young outlaw trying to create a new life, a sheriff trying to do what’s right and a whole town full of women trying to survive without their men. Flashbacks provide a better understanding of the characters, without losing tension.

2017-U.S. Made for TV. 454 min. Color. Widescreen. Produced by Jessica Levin, Michael J. Malone. Written and directed by Scott Frank. Cast: Jack O’Connell (Roy Goode), Michelle Dockery (Alice Fletcher), Scoot McNairy (Bill McNue), Merrit Wever, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Tantoo Cardinal… Jeff Daniels, Sam Waterston.

Trivia: Originally shown in seven episodes. Co-executive produced by Steven Soderbergh.

Emmys: Outstanding Supporting Actor (Daniels), Supporting Actress (Wever).

Last word: “[My researcher] gave me about 20 of what she felt were the best Western novels to read. Then she said she’d been doing a little research about mining towns in the Southwest. And I said to myself, mining – you mean the guys in the – with the black faces. I’m not so sure. And I kind of looked at all of her research. And I told her, you know, all the sooty-looking guys, and they’re down there in the dark, I don’t know that I want to write about that world. And Mimi said to me, oh, no, I’m not talking about the men. I’m talking about the women.” (Frank, NPR)
