FIVE ORDINARY PEOPLE NEEDED A MIRACLE. THEN ONE NIGHT, FAYE RILEY LEFT THE WINDOW OPEN.Ā

Tenants in an old East Village apartment building are threatened by greedy property developers, but suddenly get help from a couple of small, living space ships. This cute sci-fi comedy was developed when Steven Spielberg had a hand in the anthology series Amazing Stories. He thought this tale would make a fine feature, and a longtime collaborator of his got to direct. Itā€™s a sweet fantasy, with Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy cashing in on their Cocoon (1985) success, and they are more than welcome to it. The aliens are inventively designed and James Hornerā€™s music a plus, even when the story fails to reach greater heights.

1987-U.S. 106 min. Color. Directed byĀ Matthew Robbins. Screenplay: Brad Bird, Matthew Robbins, Brent Maddock, S.S. Wilson. Music: James Horner. Cast: Hume Cronyn (Frank Riley), Jessica Tandy (Faye Riley), Frank McRae (Harry Noble), Elizabeth PeƱa, Michael Carmine, Dennis Boutsikaris.
