Tomb Raider

After the disappearance of her father (Dominic West), Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) finds a secret message from him and heads to Hong Kong to follow in his tracks… Here’s a reboot that works better than the Angelina Jolie movies, introducing a younger, more grounded Lara Croft who’s less of a comic-book character; Vikander delivers an excellent, very physical performance. This is an appealing adventure out in the jungle with obvious Indiana Jones vibes. The story may not be one for the ages, but there’s robust action, including a memorably intense escape from an airplane that’s falling apart over a waterfall.

2018-U.S.-Britain. 118 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Roar Uthaug. Cast: Alicia Vikander (Lara Croft), Dominic West (Richard Croft), Walton Goggins (Mathias Vogel), Daniel Wu, Kristin Scott Thomas, Derek Jacobi… Nick Frost.

Trivia: Daisy Ridley was allegedly considered for the lead.
