IN MARTIAL ARTS THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG, ONLY THE LAST MAN STANDING.Ā
The directorās first film since My Blueberry Nights (2007) is an unusual project for him, a biography on Ip Man, a legendary martial arts master who had a very eventful life and eventually became Bruce Leeās mentor in Hong Kong. The film is a romanticized, episodic journey through several decades and a few important moments in modern Chinese history that affected Ip Man and his (fictitious) relationship with the daughter of another grandmaster. Poetic and romantic, with explosive and gorgeously choreographed and designed fight sequences. Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi are radiant in their parts, but on the whole the movie is more eye candy than anything else.
