The Grandmaster

IN MARTIAL ARTS THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG, ONLY THE LAST MAN STANDING.Ā

The directorā€™s first film since My Blueberry Nights (2007) is an unusual project for him, a biography on Ip Man, a legendary martial arts master who had a very eventful life and eventually became Bruce Leeā€™s mentor in Hong Kong. The film is a romanticized, episodic journey through several decades and a few important moments in modern Chinese history that affected Ip Man and his (fictitious) relationship with the daughter of another grandmaster. Poetic and romantic, with explosive and gorgeously choreographed and designed fight sequences. Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi are radiant in their parts, but on the whole the movie is more eye candy than anything else.

2013-China-Hong Kong. 108 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed byĀ Wong Kar-wai. Cinematography: Philippe Le Sourd. Costume Design: William Chang. Cast: Tony Leung (Ip Man), Zhang Ziyi (Gong Er), Chang Chen (ā€The Razorā€ Yixiantian), Wang Qingxiang, Shang Tielong, Zhao Benshan.

Trivia: Chinese title: Yi dai zong shi. The story of Ip Man was also told in a trilogy, starting with Ip Man (2008).
