The Purge: Election Year

PURGE FOR THE PEOPLE.

On Purge night, a U.S. senator (Elizabeth Mitchell) who’s campaigning for the presidency on a plan to abolish the tradition is targeted and tries to stay safe from assassins together with her bodyguard (Frank Grillo). The third chapter had a marketing drive that cleverly borrowed from the Trump campaign and on the whole it has a much more political and intriguing script than the first two films. The violence is wickedly amusing at times, but James DeMonaco doesn’t know when to quit; the shootouts go on forever.

2016-U.S. 108 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by James DeMonaco. Cast: Frank Grillo (Leo Barnes), Elizabeth Mitchell (Charlie Roan), Mykelti Williamson (Joe Dixon), Joseph Julian Soria, Betty Gabriel, Terry Serpico.

Trivia: Followed by The Forever Purge (2021).
