The Lobster

David (Colin Farrell) arrives at a hotel; he has 45 days to find a new partner after being abandoned by his wife, or he will be turned into an animal. The director of Dogtooth (2009) delivers another twisted, dark comedy that takes place in an authoritarian society where single people live in the forest, hunted by the hotel guests. This was his first international film, with brilliant moments of satire; funny in a restrained way, but it does lose its hypnotic grip after a while. Farrell is the stand-out as a man who’s desperately trying to fit in.
