Dreams

Susanne and Doris (Eva Dahlbeck, Harriet Andersson) go to Gothenburg for a photo shoot and both have separate emotional encounters with men. One of Ingmar Bergman’s lesser films, released the same year as his masterpiece Smiles of a Summer Night. The two women are very different; the older, more experienced one is haunted by her love for a married man, and the younger one has a little adventure with a much older man who has money but also carries a lot of sadness. Andersson and Gunnar Björnstrand are very good; their part of the film is more amusing than Dahlbeck and Ulf Palme’s dour romance.

1955-Sweden. 87 min. B/W. Written and directed by Ingmar Bergman. Cast: Eva Dahlbeck (Susanne Frank), Harriet Andersson (Doris), Gunnar Björnstrand (Otto Sönderby), Ulf Palme (Henrik Lobelius), Inga Landgré, Benkt-Åke Benktsson… Sven Lindberg, Naima Wifstrand, Git Gay, Carl-Gustaf Lindstedt, Inga Gill.

Trivia: Original title: Kvinnodröm.
