Baseball player Monty Brewster (Richard Pryor) learns that he stands to inherit $300 million if he can spend 30 million of it within 30 days… but it’s not as simple as it sounds. The 1902 novel has been filmed many times, including as a Fatty Arbuckle vehicle, and the decade when ”greed was good” may have looked like the right time to give it another go. The problem is that Walter Hill’s heart wasn’t really in this and he doesn’t seem able to help Pryor and John Candy make us laugh. The fact that Monty can’t tell anyone why he must spend it all turns into a frustrating and repetitive plot device.
