Submergence

LOVE HAS NO LIMITS.

As a bioscientist (Alicia Vikander) prepares to journey to the bottom of the ocean, and a British military operative (James McAvoy) is being held captive by jihadists somewhere in Africa, they can’t stop thinking of each other and how they met. A romantic film that spends a lot of time showing how Danielle and James met at a luxurious retreat and fell in love; the second half of the movie follows him in captivity while she largely stares out windows and checks her phone. A frustrating and lethargic structure for a movie, even if the scenery is pretty and McAvoy is worth a look.

2018-Germany-France-Spain-U.S. 112 min. Color. Directed by Wim Wenders. Novel: J.M. Ledgard. Cast: Alicia Vikander (Danielle Flinders), James McAvoy (James More), Alexander Siddig (Dr. Shadid), Celyn Jones, Mohamed Hakeemshady, Reda Kateb.
