No Escape

A NATION IN REVOLT. INNOCENT CIVILIANS CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE. HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO TO SURVIVE?

An American family, the Dwyers, arrive in a Southeast Asian country just as a violent uprising threatens to overthrow the regime. An action-thriller that follows the old Hollywood tradition of subjecting white westerners to danger in foreign countries. In this case, we never learn exactly what country it is, and it doesn’t really matter (all we know is that it’s not Vietnam, which plays a heroic part instead). The film was accused of racism; the faceless attackers might as well be zombies. Hardly subtle, but not irrelevant at a time when terrorists regard tourists as legitimate targets. Undeniably very intense and it’s easy to root for this family.

2015-U.S. 103 min. Color. Directed by John Erick Dowdle. Cast: Owen Wilson (Jack Dwyer), Lake Bell (Annie Dwyer), Pierce Brosnan (Hammond), Sterling Jerins, Claire Geare.

Trivia: Michelle Monaghan was allegedly first cast as Annie.
