Justice League

UNITE THE LEAGUE.

After the death of Superman (Henry Cavill), Earth is threatened by a supervillain and his demonic legion, leading Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) and Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) to form a league of heroes together with a couple of new talents. The DC Comics version of Marvel’s The Avengers tries hard to build the charm and sense of humor that’s been sorely lacking in previous instalments, but once the action kicks into high gear it’s the same kind of soulless 3D effects extravaganza that we know far too well. Boring villain, but there are a few highlights, including Ezra Miller.

2017-U.S. 120 min. Color. Directed by Zack Snyder. Screenplay: Chris Terrio, Joss Whedon. Music: Danny Elfman. Cast: Ben Affleck (Bruce Wayne/Batman), Henry Cavill (Clark Kent/Superman), Gal Gadot (Diana Prince/Wonder Woman), Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher… Amy Adams, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, J.K. Simmons, Robin Wright, Amber Heard, Billy Crudup. Voice of Ciarán Hinds. Cameo: Jesse Eisenberg.

Trivia: Co-executive produced by Affleck and Christopher Nolan. After the suicide of their daughter, Snyder and his producer-wife Deborah left the production; Whedon stepped in as director and completed it. Elfman reused the theme he wrote for Batman in Tim Burton’s movies. Momoa got his own spin-off movie, Aquaman (2018). In 2021, a 242-min. director’s cut titled Zack Snyder’s Justice League was released on HBO Max, where all Whedon’s contributions had been replaced with Snyder’s original footage and newly shot scenes; Jared Leto makes an appearance as the Joker in that version.
