Doc Hollywood

HE’S A BIG CITY PLASTIC SURGON… IN A SMALL TOWN THAT DOESN’T TAKE PLASTIC.

On his way to Los Angeles where he’s just gotten a job as a plastic surgeon, Benjamin Stone (Michael J. Fox) crashes his car in a small town in South Carolina and is sentenced to community service. In later years, it has been pointed out that the story of Cars (2006) is very similar to this charming comedy where the leading character learns a little rural humility. This one was also a box-office hit, albeit a minor one, with a perfect Fox performance as the cocky surgeon no one really likes, but we still root for. The small town folks are portrayed by very capable supporting actors and we’re also treated to a pleasant romance. Sweet and enjoyable.

1991-U.S. 104 min. Color. Directed by Michael Caton-Jones. Book: Neil B. Shulman (”What? Dead… Again?”). Song: ”The One and Only” (performed by Chesney Hawkes). Cast: Michael J. Fox (Benjamin Stone), Julie Warner (Lou), Woody Harrelson (Hank Gordon), Bridget Fonda, Roberts Blossom, Barnard Hughes… David Ogden Stiers, George Hamilton.
