Death Wish

HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO TO PROTECT YOUR FAMILY?

When Chicago surgeon Paul Kersey’s (Bruce Willis) wife and daughter are attacked in his home by three burglars, resulting in his wife’s death, he slowly turns into a vigilante. This remake of the 1974 Charles Bronson classic tries to be relevant as it is set in violent, modern-day Chicago. Reasonably compelling most of the time, but undone by a few crucial ingredients: Willis’s wooden performance and the fact that Eli Roth can’t help himself, adding a few inappropriate, jarring moments of splatter humor; the ending is groan-inducing.

2018-U.S. 107 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Eli Roth. Screenplay: Joe Carnahan. Novel: Brian Garfield. Cast: Bruce Willis (Paul Kersey), Vincent D’Onofrio (Frank Kersey), Dean Norris (Kevin Raines), Kimberly Elise, Mike Epps, Elisabeth Shue… Len Cariou.

Trivia: Sylvester Stallone, Liam Neeson and Russell Crowe were allegedly considered for the lead; at one point, Carnahan was also going to direct the film.
