For the Love of Spock

Adam Nimoy, the son of Leonard, started this documentary as a project focusing on the star’s most famous character, Spock in Star Trek, but after his death in 2015 it developed into a movie about Nimoy’s whole life, from his son’s perspective. Adam appears on camera and conducts interviews with many actors and filmmakers who are part of the ”Star Trek” family, the original and the new one. Well made and touching, the documentary shows how talented Nimoy was in many different ways, but the son also uses the film as therapy in a way, talking about and illustrating Nimoy’s weaknesses as a father and the nature of their conflicts. Nicely produced, with amusing illustrations and tons of clips from Nimoy’s movies and TV shows. Star Trek is front and center, but that’s not all of it.

2016-U.S. 111 min. Color. Produced by Joseph Kornbrodt, Kevin Layne. Directed by Adam Nimoy.

Trivia: Among those interviewed: William Shatner, George Takei, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Jim Parsons, Jason Alexander, J.J. Abrams, Neil deGrasse Tyson and Nicholas Meyer.

Last word: “The key issue for me was that I didn’t have his point of view about our relationship. I was concerned that it was going to be one-sided and I had to rely heavily on my sister to comment on it. However, in December last year while we were deep in production I was going through a box of memorabilia, most notably letters I had received, and this letter from my father suddenly appeared. I had no recollection of it whatsoever, it was written in 1973 and I hadn’t looked at it since. Suddenly it appeared in my hands, and it was the key that we really needed to make this film work. It meant my dad could comment on the ups and downs of our relationship and give his perspective.” (Nimoy, Den of Geek)
