The Here After

After committing a heinous crime, the teenaged John (Ulrik Munther) is released and returns to his family… but not everyone in his hometown is happy to see him. For his feature film debut, director Magnus von Horn returned to a subject he had covered in a 2011 short – teenagers who kill. Singer Munther is good in his acting debut as the boy who looks timid and soft but harbors great aggression; when kids at school make sure his deeds are never forgiven or forgotten, the consequences can be serious. Mats Blomgren delivers the film’s outstanding performance as John’s severely pressured father. This portrait of alienated youth doesn’t break new ground, but finds the right tone and is quietly compelling.

2015-Sweden-France-Poland. 100 min. Color. Produced by Madeleine Ekman, Mariusz Wlodarski. Written and directed by Magnus von Horn. Cast: Ulrik Munther (John), Mats Blomgren (Martin), Alexander Nordgren (Filip), Wieslaw Komasa, Loa Ek, Ellen Jelinek… Inger Nilsson.

Trivia: Original title: Efterskalv.

Last word: “We saw a face on TV, a young musician, Ulrik Munther – I didn’t know who he was at that time, but he was quite famous in Sweden, and still is. He wasn’t what I was looking for at all, I wasn’t looking to cast someone already known, or a musician, but I met him and he made a huge impression on me, he was just right for the role. And he was looking to change his career direction at that time too, as he was mostly connected to a young fanbase, and wanted to pursue a different kind of music, so it was good for him to do something quite dark like that.” (von Horn, Mr. Rumsey’s Film Related Musings)
