A Spanish bull called Ferdinand grows up preferring to smell the flowers rather than fighting with the other bulls; however, he finds it hard to escape what’s considered his destiny. The Ice Age and Rio director’s adaptation of a classic children’s book was previously filmed by Disney as a short, Ferdinand the Bull (1938). This one falls rather comfortably into its formula and offers a reasonable amount of 3D fun and adventure as Ferdinand meets new friends, including a wacky goat energetically voiced by Kate McKinnon. The film even has a ”meat is murder” message, with a visit to a horrifying slaughterhouse.

2017-U.S. Animated. 106 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Carlos Saldanha. Book: Munro Leaf, Robert Lawson (”The Story of Ferdinand”). Song: ”Home” (Nick Jonas, Justin Tranter, Nick Monson). Voices of John Cena (Ferdinand), Kate McKinnon (Lupe), David Tennant (Angus), Bobby Cannavale, Anthony Anderson, Peyton Manning.
