Top of the Lake: China Girl

Four years after the first miniseries, Sydney Detective Robin Griffin (Elisabeth Moss) is investigating the death of an Asian girl whoā€™s floated ashore at Bondi Beach. Jane Campionā€™s follow-up to the highly acclaimed but somewhat overrated Top of the Lake (2013) didnā€™t go down as well among critics, which certainly canā€™t be blamed on the cast. Moss is a tower of strength and brilliantly aided by Gwendoline Christie (as a pregnant Constable) and Nicole Kidman (as the woman who raised Mossā€™s now teenage daughter) who turn in funny and emotional performances. The story has its moments, but suffers from several comically overblown characters.

2017-Australia-New Zealand-Britain-U.S. Made for TV. 354 min. Color. Directed byĀ Jane Campion, Ariel Kleiman. Teleplay: Jane Campion, Gerard Lee. Cast: Elisabeth Moss (Robin Griffin), Nicole Kidman (Julia Edwards), Gwendoline Christie (Miranda Hilmarson), David Dencik, Ewen Leslie, Alice Englert.

Trivia: Originally shown in either six (Britain) or three (U.S.) episodes; also shown at the Cannes festival in one sitting.
