Chungking Express

IF MY MEMORY OF HER HAS AN EXPIRATION DATE, LET IT BE 10,000 YEARS…

One of the movies that impressed Quentin Tarantino to the degree that he started his own distribution company just to make sure they got a U.S. release. Consisting of two stories told in sequence, we are first introduced to a cop (Takeshi Kaneshiro) and a mysterious woman in a blonde wig (Brigitte Lin), then to another cop (Tony Leung) who becomes the object of interest to a quirky girl (Faye Wong) in a snack bar. The first part is easily overshadowed by the longer and more emotional second part, a love story where Fayeā€™s behavior will either charm or repel audiences. Vividly directed, with visual touches similar to Godardā€™s.

1994-Hong Kong. 103 min. Color. Written and directed byĀ Wong Kar-wai. Cinematography: Christopher Doyle, Lau Wai-keung. Cast: Brigitte Lin (Woman in Blonde Wig), Takeshi Kaneshiro (He Qiwu), Tony Leung (Cop 663), Faye Wong (Faye), Valerie Chow, ā€Piggyā€ Chan.

Trivia: Original title: Chung Hing sam lam. The director originally conceived a third storyline for this film, but then turned it into a separate movie, Fallen Angels (1995).
