Red Dawn

IN OUR TIME, NO FOREIGN ARMY HAS EVER OCCUPIED AMERICAN SOIL. UNTIL NOW.

When joint Soviet-Cuban forces invade the United States after a nuclear strike, a group of teenagers in Colorado flee into the woods and organize armed resistance. Criticized for its violence at the time of its premiere, this film has much greater problems than that. The premise is ridiculous, but treated earnestly by the filmmakers and a young cast whose performances are ultimately too overheated. It’s fun to watch these future stars, but the emotional potential falls in the shadow of constant gunfights and explosions.

1984-U.S. 114 min. Color. Directed by John Milius. Screenplay: Kevin Reynolds, John Milius. Cast: Patrick Swayze (Jed Eckert), C. Thomas Howell (Robert Morris), Lea Thompson (Erica Mason), Charlie Sheen, Powers Boothe, Ben Johnson… Harry Dean Stanton, Jennifer Grey.

Trivia: Remade as Red Dawn (2012).
