The Chronicles of Riddick

ALL THE POWER IN THE UNIVERSE CAN’T CHANGE DESTINY.

This sequel to Pitch Black (2000) brings the story five years into the future where Richard Riddick (Vin Diesel) is hunted by mercenaries and becomes involved with a strange, religious force that conquers planets. The original was more of a straightforward thriller, but this action-adventure builds a whole mythology around Riddick and his enemies. Has its fans and a few visually engaging scenes, but the story is a messy snooze-fest. Diesel is still watchable, but why hire Judi Dench and not give her something proper to work with?

2004-U.S. 119 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by David Twohy. Cast: Vin Diesel (Richard Riddick), Colm Feore (Lord Marshal), Thandiwe Newton (Dame Vaako), Judi Dench, Karl Urban, Alexa Davalos… Linus Roache, Keith David.

Trivia: Co-produced by Diesel. Followed by an animated short film, The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury (2004), and  Riddick (2013).
