The Match Factory Girl

matchfactorygirlIn the final part of the director’s “proletariat trilogy”, we follow a young woman (Kati Outinen) who’s living with her drunken mother and stepfather, has a boring job at a factory and dreams of love, but is unable to attract any decent men. Then she meets Aarne (Vesa Vierikko), who turns out to be a pig, and that becomes the final straw for Iiris. Undeniably stringent storytelling; Aki Kaurismäki offers us no frills in his depiction of how a woman is driven to extreme acts. Very unsentimental, almost to a fault, but Kaurismäki purists (and many critics) loved it. Outinen is excellent in the lead.

1990-Finland. 70 min. Color. Written and directed by Aki Kaurismäki. Cast: Kati Outinen (Iiris), Elina Salo (Mother), Esko Nikkari (Stepfather), Vesa Vierikko (Aarne).

Trivia: Original title: Tulitikkutehtaan tyttö. The other films in the trilogy are Shadows in Paradise (1986) and Ariel (1988).
