Safe Haven

YOU KNOW IT WHEN YOU FIND IT.

safehavenAfter running away from home with her hands bloody, Erin (Julianne Hough) creates a new, anonymous life in a North Carolina small town… but a dedicated police officer is on her trail. Lasse Hallström’s second screen adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel is at least better than his first attempt, Dear John (2010). The look and feel is basically the same, with some added thriller elements. Even though the film deals with a serious subject, the saccharine idyll that becomes Hough’s safe haven makes it hard to take things seriously. Still, watchable on a superficial level.

2013-U.S. 115 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Lasse Hallström. Novel: Nicholas Sparks. Cast: Josh Duhamel (Alex Wheatley), Julianne Hough (Katie Feldman/Erin Tierney), Cobie Smulders (Jo/Carly), David Lyons, Irene Ziegler, Red West.

Trivia: Keira Knightley was allegedly considered for a lead role.
