THERE’S MORE TO FAMILY THAN WHAT YOU SEE.Ā
After the death of his wife, Elliot Anderson (Kevin Costner), who has a problem with alcohol, is left to care for their biracial granddaughter, but the childās fatherās family wants custody. Costner reunited with his Upside of Anger (2005) director for another film that has him playing a drunk. Heās good as the widower, and the filmmakers had the best of intentions in their attempt to have an adult conversation about race on a family level. However, the more we get into the conflict between Costner and the Black family the more stereotypes are reinforced.
