CBGB

50,000 BANDS AND 1 DISGUSTING BATHROOM.

cbgbIn the 1970s, Hilly Kristal (Alan Rickman), who’s had several bankruptcies, sets up a bar in New York City that’s meant to become a country music venue… but instead turns into a legendary punk rock haven. You’d imagine that a movie about CBGB might look as outrageous and passionate as the club, but much like 54 (1998) it settles for trying to imitate colorful celebrities and the atmosphere as closely as possible, ignoring everything else. Rickman is fun to watch, but his character is so aloof it’s hard to genuinely care about him.

2013-U.S. 102 min. Color. Directed by Randall Miller. Cast: Alan Rickman (Hilly Kristal), Malin Åkerman (Debbie Harry), Justin Bartha (Stiv Bators), Richard de Klerk, Johnny Galecki, Kyle Gallner…Rupert Grint, Bradley Whitford.
