They Made Me a Criminal

I AM A FUGITIVE! I AM HUNTED BY THE MOB! I AM WANTED BY THE COPS! I AM FORGOTTEN BY DECENT WOMEN!

theymademecriminalAfter an evening that ends with a reporter dying at the hands of a boxing manager, world champ Johnny Bradfield (John Garfield) goes on the lam and ends up at a farm in Arizona whose owners care for juvenile delinquents… One of Busby Berkeley’s non-musical efforts is a remake of The Life of Jimmy Dolan (1933) that teams up Garfield with the Dead End Kids as the boisterous boys at the farm. The story also has a budding romance, and a tough cop looking for the boxer. A lively but unnecessary remake; Claude Rains is fun to watch in a for him unusual, almost parodic, part.

1939-U.S. 92 min. B/W. Directed by Busby Berkeley. Cast: John Garfield (Johnny Bradfield), Claude Rains (Monty Phelan), Gloria Dickson (Peggy), May Robson, Billy Halop, Huntz Hall… Ward Bond, Ann Sheridan.
