Life in a Fishbowl

EVERYONE HAS SOMETHING TO HIDE.

lifeinafishbowlA film that became a box-office hit in its native country, likely because of the way it hits angrily at the reckless men who helped cause the Great Recession of 2008. We follow three main characters; an alcoholic poet with a horrible past, a kindergarten teacher and young mother who is also a prostitute, and a former professional soccer player who’s just been hired by a financial firm. It’s a pretty grim picture of Reykjavik that the director paints. Although he maintains our interest in the three characters and their interactions, and the acting is fine, there’s nothing here that adds an extra layer to a set-up we’ve seen before.

2014-Iceland. 129 min. Color. Directed by Baldvin Z. Screenplay: Baldvin Z, Birgir Örn Steinarsson. Cast: Hera Hilmar (Eik), Thor Kristjansson (Sölvi), Ingvar Þórðarson (Hannes), Sveinn Ólafur Gunnarsson, Þorsteinn Bachmann, Laufey Elíasdóttir.
