The Water Diviner

A FATHER’S JOURNEY IN SEARCH OF HIS SONS.Ā

waterdivinerOne year after the end of World War I, Joshua Connor (Russell Crowe) makes his way to Gallipoli, convinced that heā€™ll be able to find his three sons among the peninsulaā€™s many corpses. Croweā€™s directing debut is ambitious. He clearly wants it to be a sweeping epic with a bit of adventure thrown in, as well as a romance between his character and a sultry Turkish hotel manager (Olga Kurylenko). At the same time, it is also a touching and very dark story about the horrors of this war and its aftermath (in the shape of continually clashing cultures), and a fatherā€™s grief and determination. Attractively shot, but uneven.

2014-Australia-Turkey-U.S. 111 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed byĀ Russell Crowe. Novel: Andrew Anastasios, Meaghan Wilson-Anastasios. Cinematography: Andrew Lesnie. Cast: Russell Crowe (Joshua Connor), Olga Kurylenko (Ayshe), Yilmaz Erdogan (Hasan), Cem Yilmaz, Jai Courtney, Ryan Corr.

Trivia: Co-executive produced by Brett Ratner.
