Conviction

AN EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY OF HOW FAR WE GO TO FIGHT FOR OUR FAMILY.

convictionIn the early 1980s, Kenny Waters (Sam Rockwell) is sentenced to prison for a murder; his sister (Hilary Swank) knows that he’s innocent and goes to law school to be able to clear him in court. Based on a real-life case, this is a hell of a story whose potential is never quite met by the filmmakers. Flashbacks are meant to give us a better chance to build emotions for Swank and Rockwell’s characters, who are not always easy to like. The actors are very convincing and keep the movie afloat. The mediocre treatment is a problem; perhaps a more flamboyant filmmaker would have found ways to make this more interesting and moving.

2010-Britain. 107 min. Color. Directed by Tony Goldwyn. Screenplay: Pamela Gray. Cast: Hilary Swank (Betty Anne Waters), Sam Rockwell (Kenny Waters), Minnie Driver (Abra Rice), Melissa Leo, Peter Gallagher, Ari Graynor… Juliette Lewis.

Trivia: Naomi Watts was allegedly first considered for the lead role.
