The Gambler

THE ONLY WAY OUT IS ALL IN.

thegambler14Literature professor Jim Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) is on a downhill slide and has amassed an impressive gambling debt; after borrowing money from a criminal, it gets even worse. A remake of the 1974 movie that hardly seems worth the effort, in spite of good production values and a stellar cast. That includes Wahlberg who is easy to believe as a deeply unhappy man whoā€™s stopped giving a damn a long time ago, at least when it comes to his own future and well-being. Unfortunately, that makes it equally hard for us to give a damn about him, and the story turns repetitious.

2014-U.S. 111 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed byĀ Rupert Wyatt. Screenplay: William Monahan. Cast: Mark Wahlberg (Jim Bennett), John Goodman (Frank), Brie Larson (Amy Phillips), Michael Kenneth Williams, Jessica Lange, Emory Cohenā€¦ George Kennedy.

Trivia:Ā Co-produced by Wahlberg. Leonardo DiCaprio was allegedly considered for the lead; Martin Scorsese for directing duties. Kennedy’s last film.
