Walesa: Man of Hope

walesaIn his late 80s, director Andrzej Wajda is still full of energy as he delivers another film that deals with his country’s history. This time it’s a biography of Lech Walesa, the electrician who stood up to the Communist leadership, founded Solidarity and was elected President after the fall of the regime. Wajda focuses on Walesa’s political awakening and how he learned to build a successful resistance movement, while also juggling family life. Archive footage blends with dramatic reenactments and Robert Wieckiewicz is very convincing in the lead, but the film lacks an emotional punch.

2013-Poland. 127 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Andrzej Wajda. Screenplay: Janusz Glowacki. Cast: Robert Wieckiewicz (Lech Walesa), Agnieszka Grochowska (Danuta Walesa), Zbigniew Zamachowski (Nawislak), Maria Rosaria Omaggio, Cezary Kosinski, Miroslaw Baka.
