The Last Tycoon

HE HAS THE POWER TO MAKE ANYONE’S DREAM COME TRUE… EXCEPT HIS OWN.

lasttycoonIn the 1930s, Monroe Stahr (Robert De Niro) is the youngest and most successful studio executive in Hollywood, but he becomes obsessed with a woman… F. Scott Fitzgerald never finished the novel before his death, but Harold Pinter adds his own touch to this story, which partly mirrors that of legendary real-life studio boss Irving Thalberg. The depiction of Stahr at work and how he coddles his angst-ridden movie stars, fights off money-obsessed board members and negotiates with hostile unions is engrossing… but his love concerns are less interesting, and that’s supposed to be the heart of the film. Still, a great, sprawling cast.

1976-U.S. 125 min. Color. Directed by Elia Kazan. Screenplay: Harold Pinter. Novel: F. Scott Fitzgerald. Cast: Robert De Niro (Monroe Stahr), Tony Curtis (Rodriguez), Robert Mitchum (Pat Brady), Jeanne Moreau, Jack Nicholson, Donald Pleasence… Peter Strauss, Ray Milland, Dana Andrews, Theresa Russell, John Carradine, Anjelica Huston. Cameo: Lew Ayres.

Trivia: Kazan’s last and Russell’s first film. Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino were allegedly considered for the lead; Mike Nichols and Peter Bogdanovich for directing duties. The novel was also turned into a TV series, The Last Tycoon (2017).
