Safety Last!

safetylast, jpgHarold Lloyd finds a job in the city as a salesclerk at a department store, but he exaggerates his luck in letters to his girlfriend (Mildred Davis) ā€“ who soon comes to visit. One of the star’s most famous comedies is one of the last he made with his co-star Davis before marrying her. The story is very simple, but has many funny slapstick scenes (with well-staged gags) that eventually lead to the sequence that has gone down in history, where Lloyd is climbing a building and constantly faces challenges that could cause him to fall down. Ingeniously made, with clock and all, and looks really dangerous. Directed with a lot of playfulness, as in the cheeky opening scene.

1923-U.S. Silent. 78 min. B/W. Produced byĀ Hal Roach. Directed byĀ Fred Newmeyer, Sam Taylor. Screenplay: Hal Roach, Sam Taylor, Tim Whelan. Cinematography: Walter Lundin. Cast: Harold Lloyd (The Boy), Mildred Davis (The Girl), Bill Strothers (The Pal), Noah Young.Ā
