THE ONLY WAY OUT IS DOWN.
Urban archeology student Scarlett Marlowe (Perdita Weeks) and a team of explorers head down into the Catacombs of Paris to look for the Philosopher’s Stone. Director John Erick Dowdle returns to the found footage genre after making Quarantine (2008) and the film has similar problems – the annoying aspects and limitations of the concept prevent it from getting really scary. The story also takes forever to build tension. Still, the setting is intriguing and the final half-hour serves up a funhouse of horror effects.
2014-U.S. 93 min. Color. Directed by John Erick Dowdle. Cast: Perdita Weeks (Scarlett Marlowe), Ben Feldman (George), Edwin Hodge (Benji), François Civil, Marion Lambert, Ali Marhyar.
