Chasing Amy

SEX IS EASY. LOVE IS HARD.

chasingamyThis return to low-budget projects for Kevin Smith was a comeback after the failure of Mallrats (1995). Itā€™s a story about a comic book artist (Ben Affleck) who falls in love with a gay woman (Joey Lauren Adams) and canā€™t accept just being her friend. That their relationship would be against nature is but a speed bump ā€“ he figures there must be some straight bone in her body. The strength of the screenplay lies in the inspired, funny dialogue and the fact that the story, in all its quirkiness, still feels honest (from a heterosexual perspective). Good performances from everyone in the cast; Jason Lee is fun as the terminally rude Banky. Holdenā€™s attempts to come clean with everything in the ending are memorable.

1997-U.S. 111 min. Color. Produced byĀ Scott Mosier. Written and directed byĀ Kevin Smith. Editing: Scott Mosier, Kevin Smith. Cast: Ben Affleck (Holden McNeil), Joey Lauren Adams (Alyssa Jones), Jason Lee (Banky Edwards), Dwight Ewell, Jason Mewes, Kevin Smithā€¦ Matt Damon, Casey Affleck.Ā

Trivia:Ā Smith was dating Adams when he wrote the script, which is partly inspired by her.

Quote:Ā “Don’t make me bust a cap in your ass, yo! Jedi’s the most insulting instalment, because Vader’s beautiful, black visage is sullied when he pulls off his mask to reveal a feeble, crusty old white man! They’re trying to tell us that deep inside we all want to be white!’ (Ewell discussing the “Star Wars” trilogy with Lee)

Last word:Ā “There were some issues in [Adams and my]Ā relationship that kind of came up, there were some insecurities I was dealing with, and it kind of led to what the movie became. It started out as one thing, and then I just started building stuff into it. I never suggested, ‘Let’s all sleep together,’ and [Joey’s] not gay ā€“ there was nothing like that. But [in the movie], the Holden character hits a primary insecurity over somebody else’s past, which is something that kind of came up in our relationship. So it actually wound up being kind of therapeutic doing the script.” (Smith, Industry Central)
