Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey

beingelmoOne year before celebrated puppeteer Kevin Clash left his job on Sesame Street and career as the man behind Elmo, one of the show’s most enduring puppets, after allegations of improper sexual conduct with a minor, came this documentary. It follows Clash’s journey from boyhood (when he became fascinated by Sesame Street and other TV shows and started making his own puppets) to his involvement with Jim Henson and his crew. We learn the craft behind puppeteering, how much of a performer’s personality that goes into the puppet, ultimately deciding just how popular it’s going to be, and how Clash helps new generations and foreign branches find their footing. Sweet and interesting, but learning more about all sides of Clash (the adult ones as well) would have brought more depth.

2011-U.S. 76 min. Color. Directed by Constance Marks. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg.
