Inside Llewyn Davis

insidellewyndaviesNew York City, 1961; folk singer Llewyn Davis’s (Oscar Isaac) solo album isn’t selling and every night he’s trying to find new gigs and a place to sleep. That’s the situation we find him in, and that’s the situation we’ll leave him in, in this pre-Dylan portrayal of the early ’60s folk scene. The Coen brothers once again show interest in the genre, setting their story almost thirty years after O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000). T. Bone Burnett’s music direction is an asset to the film, and so is the cast (especially Isaac). The movie’s got New York flavor, but it’s a bit of a struggle to care for Llewyn and his plight.

2013-U.S.-France. 104 min. Color. Written and directed by Ethan Coen, Joel Coen. Cinematography: Bruno Delbonnel. Song: “Please Mr. Kennedy” (Ed Rush, George Cromarty, T.
