L’Enfant

lenfantTwenty-year-old Bruno (Jérémie Renier) sells his newborn son to a black-market adoption ring, but when his girlfriend (Déborah François) ends up in hospital after learning the truth, he changes his mind and tries to get the baby back. In this much celebrated film, the Dardenne brothers are true to their themes – and their favorite actors, since some of them have appeared in the directors’ previous works. Well-acted and uncomfortably realistic, the film forces us to care for a low-life like Bruno, but too often it feels like we’re just following him around without really understanding his motivations.

2005-Belgium-France. 95 min. Color. Written and directed by Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Luc Dardenne. Cast: Jérémie Renier (Bruno), Déborah François (Sonia), Jérémie Segard (Steve), Fabrizio Rongione, Olivier Gourmet.

Trivia: Alternative title in English: The Child.

Cannes: Palme d’Or.
