Berberian Sound Studio

berberiansoundstudioBritish foley artist Gilderoy (Toby Jones) arrives in Italy to work on a horror movie, but soon finds himself influenced by the eerie nature of what he’s watching onscreen. The director’s second film may be a tribute to (and to some degree imitation of) the giallo film genre, but this isn’t a horror movie. It is more like a creepy study of a man’s deteriorating mental health and a meticulous look into one of the most unglamorous processes in moviemaking. The story is difficult to penetrate, but worth a look because of Jones, lovingly crafted period details and the claustrophobic atmosphere.

2012-Britain. 92 min. Color. Written and directed by Peter Strickland. Music: Broadcast. Cast: Toby Jones (Gilderoy), Cosimo Fusco (Francesco), Antonio Mancino (Santini), Tonia Sotiropoulou, Fatma Mohamed, Salvatore Greco.
