Nowhere Home

nowherehomeAfter a venture into scripted drama in the shape of The Angel (2009), director Margreth Olin returned to the field she knows best, documentaries. This one was inspired by a new immigration law in Norway that makes it easier for the authorities to kick young refugees out of the country once they turn 18. We follow Goli from Kurdistan who’s already been expulsed once and is now making another attempt to find a better place, and two teen brothers who fled from Afghanistan. The director gets close to them and others with striking portraits in black-and-white, their bodies showing scars that reveal their past. Olin’s so invested in her project that there’s even a scene where she testifies in a court hearing, but her compassion and intelligent reasoning makes up for a certain lack of focus.

2012-Norway. 93 min. Color-B/W.Ā Produced and directed byĀ Margreth Olin.
