Around Christmas time in the city of Clermont-Ferrand, the Catholic Jean Louis (Jean-Louis Trintignant) is introduced to a woman (Françoise Fabian) who is more or less his opposite. Eric Rohmer’s third moral tale is the one that gave him a wide international breakthrough, complete with Oscar nominations. The philosophical argument of Pascal’s Wager plays a large part in the conversations between our three leads – it’s all about love, the choices we make and the consequences we have to live with. A well-acted and stark intellectual exercise; always interesting, never moving.
