The Borgias

theborgiasProducer Michael Hirst followed up the success of The Tudors with another elaborate chronicle of a historical family, this time the Borgias, the Spanish family that rose to power in the 1400s with the appointments of two popes; the series follows the latter, the most famous of them, Alexander VI (Jeremy Irons). As in The Tudors, focus lay on the many sexual, bloody and political intrigues that rocked the family, as well as the many enemies they created throughout their reign. The show never got the chance to wrap up story threads properly, but offered plenty of robust, simple, often over-the-top entertainment, above all propelled by Irons who truly seemed to cherish playing the power-hungry pope.
