Red

THERE’S NO SUBSTITUTE FOR EXPERIENCE.

redFormer CIA agent Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) is targeted by a team of killers, but escapes; he subsequently gathers old pros and goes after those responsible for the attack. This adaptation of a graphic novel may lack the kind of visual flair that most have, and it also has a lot more humor than the original. The jokes aren’t all that funny in themselves, and the story is thin and offers nothing new… but it moves fast and the cast makes all the difference. Willis, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren are very entertaining, and several others make individual scenes work better than expected.

2010-U.S. 111 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Robert Schwentke. Graphic Novel: Warren Ellis, Cully Hamner. Cast: Bruce Willis (Frank Moses), Morgan Freeman (Joe Matheson), John Malkovich (Marvin Boggs), Helen Mirren, Karl Urban, Mary-Louise Parker… Brian Cox, Richard Dreyfuss, Ernest Borgnine, James Remar.

Trivia: Followed by Red 2 (2013). John C. Reilly and Meryl Streep were allegedly considered for roles.
