Warm Bodies

HE’S STILL DEAD BUT HE’S GETTING WARMER.Ā

warmbodiesAfter a zombie apocalypse, R (Nicholas Hoult) spends his days at a deserted airport, stumbling around and looking for brains to eatā€¦ but he falls in love with a human resistance fighter (Teresa Palmer). An adorable zombie version of “Romeo and Juliet” that paints the walking dead as trapped in a state that can change ā€“ either for the worse (where they turn into creepy “Bonies”) or for the better. Purists will object, but the idea that love can change everything is executed with both passion and a light touch. As always in Jonathan Levine’s films, a terrific song score helps and so do the sweet performances by Hoult and Palmer. Alternately funny and exciting.

2013-U.S. 97 min. Color. Widescreen. Produced byĀ David Hoberman, Todd Lieberman, Bruna Papandrea. Written and directed byĀ Jonathan Levine. Novel: Isaac Marion. Cinematography: Javier Aguirresarobe. Cast: Nicholas Hoult (R), Teresa Palmer (Julie Grigio), John Malkovich (Grigio), Analeigh Tipton, Rob Corddry, Dave Franco.

Last word: “I think I was more conscious in setting it apart from other young adult things, whether it be ‘Twilight’Ā or any number of the copycats of ‘Twilight’Ā out there. I was very conscious of giving it an irreverence that I hadnā€™t seen so much in young adult films. I thought that was a big opportunity, because thatā€™s what I really enjoyed growing up; those movies that had not just adventure and romance, but a level of humour to them as well.” (Levine, Quickflix)
